tressed to kill // BRAIDING AS SCULPTURE

Did you know that the Home [Away From] Home Festival coming up Sunday 9/14 includes a Braiding-As-Sculpture competition? That's right. Hair is the clay, braiders are the artists. There's a cash prize AND the winning style will be formed into a 3D Printed Sculpture. We're still looking for participants. Full info below:

//BRAIDING AS SCULPTURE Competition

Sunday 09/14: 1-6PM
Home [Away From] Home Festival Day
Eastshore Park Lake Merritt (MacArthur & Grand)
Presented collaboratively by Home [Away From] Home, SF Arts Collective and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts: In-Community

The Braiding As Sculpture competition recognizes that braiding is a three dimensional art which maps ideas of geometry, design aesthetics and beauty on to the pallet of the body. Through bringing the often informal act of braiding to a "live" context, we recognize the act as an art-making process, presented as a performance/installation happening in real time.

We are seeking braiders from all over the Bay Area to braid designs inspired by the cultures and braiding traditions of Ethiopia and Eritrea. Braiders can be from anywhere, with any level of formal or informal hair experience.

Please bring your creativity and experimentation, a hair model whom you will braid, and any picks, clips, bobby pins you will need. Chairs will be provided.

A panel of judges will determine the winners.
First prize will win $100 and a 3-D printed model of your winning braid style. In other words, we are extending the concept to turn your braid style into an actual sculpture. Multiple versions of your sculpture will be printed and turned into an art installation at the Mission Arts and Performance Project.
